feeding mangalitsa pigs
Red Ledge Farm focuses on feeding our animals in the most healthy way possible. Our Mangalitsa/Berkshire cross pigs always have access to woodlot pastureland where they forage on forest masts (acorns and beechnuts). They are fed locally sourced grain to ensure they have a balanced diet as they grow. The pigs, when available, are finished on barley which makes the fat in the pork lighter and more clean tasting.
Commercial breeds are commonly processed at 5-6 months old while our Mangalitsa Crosses are 10 months old at processing. This allows for more developed flavor and a better fat to meat ratio.
