Feeding Heritage Pigs
Red Ledge Farm focuses on feeding our animals in the most healthy way possible. The best place to raise pigs is on a woodlot pastureland where they forage on forest masts (acorns and beechnuts). Most pigs can't live off just the land alone and if they did, they would probably need hundreds of acres of land per pig. Most homestead pigs need to be fed grain (preferably locally sourced) to ensure they have a balanced diet as they grow. Pigs can be finished on barley, which makes the fat in the pork lighter and more clean tasting.
Commercial breeds are commonly processed at 5-6 months old while Mangalitsa/Berkshire Crosses and most other Heritage Breeds are 10 months old at processing. This allows for more developed flavor and a better fat to meat ratio.
